Recently, I discovered that I could use satellite views of my home to protect my property and my family's safety. Having a bird's eye view allowed me to see my property from an entirely different angle.
Using a satellite view of your house, you not only have the power to see like a bird, you also have the power to see like a criminal.
Anyone with an Internet connection can get online and see where you live, what your house looks like and what buildings or parking structures are nearby. Just about every street, sidewalk and hedge is visible to anybody who cares to view it online.
This includes robbers, sex offenders, serial killers and stalkers. Being that the Internet makes finding almost anyone's address a piece of cake, it can be unnerving to think that the creepy guy who works at the gas station might remember the name on your credit card and look up your address online.
If a criminal were to inspect your area of residence with harmful intentions, you'd be in deep trouble. Luckily, you can prevent or at least attempt to prevent dangerous activities before they happen by pretending you're the criminal.
When a potential thief or stalker looks at these satellite map view images, they can determine:
1. If there are trees or building structures near enough to conceal their illegal activities from neighbors.
2. Where might be a good place to park their car.
3. What side of your house is closest to a street or path that would allow them to get away quickly.
4. If they even want to target your home at all, based on the criteria they find online.
Remember, it takes just seconds to zoom in and see more detail than you'd ever want strangers to have access to. This sounds scary, but you can turn things around and use these satellite sites to your advantage.
Websites like Google Maps which have a satellite feature will allow you to see a free satellite view of home. You can then check for weak spots that might make things a little too easy for the bad guys. Using satellite views of home will allow you to better protect your home and prepare for potential threats if done correctly.
The first thing you want to look out for are streets near your house that would allow criminals easy access to your home. Place motion activated floodlights in any areas around your property that a criminal might pass through to get to your house from that street.
You might also consider using other home security tools if your home looks especially vulnerable to criminals. For example, if one side of your home faces a street with no neighbors on the opposite side, it's a good idea to install window security bars on that particular side of your home.
So, go ahead, check out the free satellite views feature on Google Maps and think like a criminal. Find every security risk around your home.
